Frequently Asked Questions

Am I eligible to apply to Gabriela Ortiz Composing Studio?

The Gabriela Ortiz Composing Studio is open to musicians ages 18 and up from any country in the world.

What skills will I develop?

Fellows will develop the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to exist as well-rounded professional composers in the contemporary scene. This includes masterclasses with top composers, seminars on a variety of important topics that are not usually covered in your typical degree program (such as writing your own contracts, how to get commissions, negotiating copyright, etc.), workshops with performers on a new composition, and frequent opportunities for Fellows to share their work and receive feedback from their peers.

Who might benefit from this program?

The Gabriela Ortiz Composing Studio is intended for any early-career composer who wishes to enhance their own creative and technical skills, develop an international network of colleagues and collaborators, and graduate with a professional recording of a new piece, an Artist Diploma from OAcademy, and a suite of self-marketing materials.

Do I need to enter this program with a specific project in mind for my composition?

No, not at all. You are invited to compose your piece over the course of the program.

What time commitment should I consider?

Fellows should expect to spend 3–5 hours per week on the program, not including personal composing time. Seminars meet bi-weekly for 90 minutes.

What is the in-person residency?

All accepted Fellows are invited to join Gabriela Ortiz for a 5-day residency in Maryland, USA. During the residency, Fellows will receive advice and feedback from Gabriela, participate in workshops on their compositions with performers, engage in open conversation and group meals with peers, and explore the Chesapeake Bay area.

Is there an additional cost to the in-person residency?

All costs on the ground, including local transfers, accommodation and meals will be provided to all Fellows who attend the residency. Fellows are responsible for their own airfare to BWI Airport (Baltimore/Washington International Airport) or train tickets to Baltimore Penn Station.

Am I required to participate in the in-person residency?

Attendance is not required, but is highly suggested. Please note that this is the only guaranteed opportunity in the program where you will have the chance to interact with Gabriela Ortiz.
